Pravda je taká, že táto tradícia vo väčšine Francúzska neexistuje. Treba ju 
hľadať najmä v regiónoch ovplyvnených blízkym východom, rozumej Nemeckom. Veľkosť a význam vianočných trhov tu rastie v priamej úmere so vzdialenosťou od nemeckej hranice (a tá bola počas histórie veľmi premenlivá, len čo je pravda), čiže poradie miest je zhruba nasledovné: Štrasburg, Colmar, Metz a Nancy. Posledné menované mesto má pomerne malé trhy, zato však valcuje konkurenciu vo veľkoleposti osláv Sv. Mikuláša, na ktorú vás týmto pozývam 
.
Občania Nancy a celého regiónu nedajú na tento sviatok dopustiť. Niet divu, veď Sv. Mikuláš je patrónom Lotrinska. Čo je však viac zaujímavé, je syndróm čínskeho múru, ktorý je Francúzom vlastný. Sú veľmi prekvapení, ak im poviete, že Sv. Mikuláš sa oslavuje aj mimo Lotrinska a Alsaska.
V skutočnosti je táto tradícia rozšírená od Ruska, Ukrajiny, Rumunska, Grécka cez našu V4, Slovinsko, Chorvátsko, Rakúsko, Nemecko, Taliansko, Švajčiarsko až po Benelux (a ktovie ešte kde všade)… Zvyky sú rôzne, avšak štedrosť (a novšie aj silná komercializácia) Sv. Mikuláša je hlavným pojítkom.
V Lotrinsku nechodí Mikuláš s anjelom a čertom. Zlo predstavuje čierna postava s bičom v ruke „Père Fouettard“, ktorý je v opozícii nielen voči Mikulášovi (nehľadajte v tom politiku), ale aj voči „Père Noël“, ktorý nosí darčeky 24. alebo 25. decembra (závisí od regiónu). Père Fouettard má za úlohu trestať neposlušné deti.

Poslušné či neposlušné, skoro všetky lotrinské detváky, si 5. decembra pekne krásne opucujú topánky a šup s nimi na krb! Zvyšok už poznáte… Avšak, tu niekedy k topánkam dá aj pohár vína, ak by bol Sv. Mikuláš smädný… a miska obilia pre jeho dopravný prostriedok (pre somárika alebo na čom sa zvyklo cestovať z Turecka…). Ešte naivnejšie detváky si dajú námahu a Sv. Mikulášovi napíšu list. O niečo staršie deti však oveľa radšej vypisujú sms-ky a to vo svojom novom jazyku „texto“ (čo je zjednodušená fonetická forma, lebo ako dobre viete, francúzština je veľmi rozšafná a používa more zbytočných písmen, ktoré sa nevyslovujú, čo je pri sms-kách obzvlášť nepraktické).
Vyvrcholením osláv je šou s ohňostrojom, hudbou, svetelnými efektmi a s nejakým tým prekvapením- minulý rok to bol umelý sneh zo snehových diel, priamo na Stanislavovom námestí. Skutočne, lepšia kulisa pre túto šou, akou sú fasády barokových budov na tomto námestí snáď ani neexistuje. Na budovách býva pestrofarebná svetelná projekcia. Ohňostroj má dokonalú réžiu a načasovanie, súhra s hudbou a osvetlením je úžasná! Trvá 30-45 minút. Ukážky z minulých ročníkov si môžete pozrieť na:

Praktická rada: aby ste si toto divadlo vychutnali, musíte prísť na námestie minimálne pol hodinu skôr. Z bezpečnostných dôvodov je počet ľudí regulovaný na cca 25 000 a nemuseli by vás vpustiť.
Za návštevu stojí tiež defilé v meste Metz (tiež známom pod menom Mety), ako aj kolosálna bazilika Sv. Mikuláša v mestečku Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, 13 kilometrov od Nancy. Táto neskorogotická nádhera má jedno naj. Je v nej totiž najvyšší pilier Francúzska (21,50 m). Vlastne sú hneď dva a nachádzajú sa v transepte baziliky. V mestečku sa koná tradičný sprievod a procesia, na ktorú sa dá dostať kyvadlovou dopravou z Nancy, hneď po ohňostroji.

You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
