Priznám sa, keď som zbadala fotku tohto monumentu v jednom cestovateľskom magazíne, zachvela som sa… Hneď 
som zahájila pátranie po nete, keďže časopis publikoval fotku v rámci súťaže, kde čitatelia mali hádať, odkiaľ foto je. Stačilo dať do googlu “ruka v púšti” a už sa to valilo… Do súťaže som sa síce nezapojila, ale som veľmi rada, že som si svoj obzor rozšírila o tento skvost, ktorý nájdete v púšti Atacama, najsuchšom mieste na svete, v Chile, 75 km južne od mesta Antofagasta.
Z diaľky pripomína zabudnutú ruku obra v piesku… Kamenné prsty vystierajúce sa k azúrovej oblohe uprostred pustatiny – pohľad, ktorý zastaví čas a myšlienky. Zoznámte sa: Mano de Desierto alebo Ruka púšte.
Monument je počinom čílskeho sochára menom Mario Irarrázabal. Svoju sochu nadvihol do výšky zhruba 11 metrov a je zhotovená zo železa a cementu. Od roku 1992 stala sa už povinnou zastávkou pre všetkých turistov a cestujúcich po Panamerickej diaľnici.
Ruky sú často opakajúcim sa námetom v Irarrázabalovej tvorbe. Príkladom môže byť skorší Monumento al Ahogado (Monument utopeným). Ide vlastne o prsty vyčnievajúce z piesku na pláži v Punta del Este, populárnom letovisku v Uruguaji. Podobné sochy nájdete aj v Madride a Benátkach.
Ruka v atacamskej púšti znepokojuje. V nekonečnej pustatine pôsobí aj napriek svojej veľkosti tak krehko, zraniteľne, bezradne, tak ľudsky…
