Vianoce na Cypre začíname “cítiť” už 14. novembra, kedy začína pôst. Ten 
pozostáva z nejedenia mäsa a vo štvrtky a piatky sa nejedia ani ryby. Po 12. decembri sa pôst ešte sprísni, kedy by sa nemali jesť ani ryby, v ktorých koluje krv a nemali by sa jesť ani mliečne výrobky či piť mlieko.
Od polovičky novembra sa začínajú zdobiť aj ulice a domy. Začína sa s rozsvecovaním vianočných stromčekov aj pred väčšími nákupnými centrami. Keďže v mestách sneh cez zimu nenájdeme – len, ak tak na pohorí Troodos, niektorí Dedovia Mrázovia, Fathers Christmas, Ježiškovia či Santa Clausovia nechodia tradične na saniach ťahanými sobmi, ale na bicykli 
O Mikulášovi tu nevedia nič, aj keď tento sviatok slávia, takže deti su ukrátené o sladkosti a darčeky.
Vianoce slávia 25. decembra, aj keď sú ortodoxní. Je to pozostatok britskej kolonizácie. Svätiť začínajú o piatej ráno, kedy sa začína bohoslužba v kostole a končí asi okolo ôsmej. Potom idú domov a navaria tradičnú polievku – trachanas. Je to polievka zo sušeného kozieho syra. Nech mi to prepáčia, ale keďže strašne smrdí, tak som ju ešte ani raz neochutnala. Nenabrala som odvahu . Potom nasladuje tradične souvlaki, či jahňacina. Tento deň je rodinný. Samozrejme, iná rodina, iné zvyky, tradície, jedlá.
Darčeky dostávajú až na Nový rok, kedy oslavujú sviatok Agios Vasilios, čo v preklade pre nich znamená niečo ako pre nás Ježiško. Príchod nového roka oslavujú buď v kruhu rodiny alebo vonku v reštauráciách či baroch.
Možno mi to budú niektorí zazlievať, ale moja osobná skúsenosť je, že sa nič nevyrovná našim slovenským sviatkom, našej predvianočnej a vianočnej atmosfére. Jediné, čo je rovnaké, je chaos v obchodoch a veľké tržby pre obchodníkov .
